| This area is characterized from the Laterano Palace and the Basilica of Saint Giovanni in Laterano. Officially “Mater et Caput” of all the churches of Rome and the world. For the catholics it is the most important Basilica to visit after S. Peter and is the official ecclesiastical center of the Pope, containing the papal chair or Santa Sede. Famous the building that is next to the church, aim of pilgrimages and named “Holy Stairs”: the devout legend, of medieval origin, asserts that is the staircase leading once to the prætorium of Pilate at Jerusalem, hence sanctified by the footsteps of Jesus, that it would have been transported to Rome from Flavia Julia Elena, mother of Costantino. The great square in front of the basilica is often used for the organizations of cultural events, like manifestations and concerts of music, the most important and famous is the one of 1° the May. The quarter is a grid of residential roads and is characterized from the famous market of via Sannio. It takes it’s name from the politician and roman man of letters Appio Claudius, the constructor of the ancient Via Appia. It is developed from Mura Aureliane to the Ancient Via Appia, from Via di Cecilia Metella to the New Via Appia and includes part of the Archaeological park of the Ancient Appia. The Appio quarter is less known than it would deserve. Not only from the tourists who reach Rome and that do not live in the eternal city enough time to knowing it adequately. It has not only archaeological, but also naturalistic sites, such as the Caffarella Valley, in which plants and animals of great interest are found. Apartments for rent in Appio, San Giovanni
