The districts of Rome - Tourist information

Monti, Colosseo

mappa Monti, Colosseo
This area includes the Viminale hill and part of the Quirinale and Celio hills. It is the oldest and vastest Rione of Rome. In the Monti district many important Roman remains have survived: The Imperial Fora (Traian’s Forum, the temple of Augustus and Nerva), the Ludus Magnus (the Gladiators’ gym), Tito’s Baths, Traian’s Baths and the Colosseum. On the Oppio hill there are remains of the Domus Aurea of Nero.
The Middle Ages have left many towers as well as the churches of Santa Prassede and Santo Stefano Rotondo. Other interesting sites are the church of S. Pietro in Vincoli ( where the statue of Moses by Michelangelo is kept), the basilicas of s. Maria Maggiore and S. Giovanni in Laterano among with many other churches and buildings built in different historical periods. The area is characterized by charming narrow streets going up and down hill. The inhabitants of the Monti district are proud of living in a place where language, habits and professions belong to the Rome of the past.
