The districts of Rome - Tourist information

San Pietro, Vaticano

mappa San Pietro, Vaticano
In Rome, history has produced a strong stratification of archeological layers: the ancient city lies largely underneath the Renaissance and Baroque structures, St. Peter’s Basilica represents both the most significative example of this architectonic overlapping and, at the same time, the temple of christianity.
It is very difficult to list all the art work kept in the basilica in such a small space: the extremely moving Pietà by michelangelo, the bronze Baldacchino by Bernini, the funerary monuments dedicated to different popes created through the centuries by the greatest artists of all times; from Guglielmo della Porta to Antonio Canova without mentioning all the art work kept in the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel!
In few minutes you can reach Borgo Pio; the old XV century district next to the Vatican Walls. Among streets famous for the typical “Sanpietrini”and ancient buildings, Borgo Pio is a place where even those who don’t live in the “eternal city” can enjoy sounds, colors and flavours of the capitoline tradition. Among sacramental stores, old milkshops and restaurants of all sorts one will find small stores where artisans mend everything.
