This Rione situated south of the Aventine hill, takes its name from the hill made out of pottery fragments (testae in latin)that were discardedonce arrived in the Roman harbour. The pottery fragments have been pressed and carefully disposed on the upper side of the hill.
The Rione Testaccio, departing from the left bank of the Tiber is characteristicfor its popular mark. However, differently from other areas of Rome, Testaccio has maintained its village-like quality and has preserved the family-like relationships between its inhabitants.
Some interesting sites in Testaccio are: Monte Testaccio, Piramide Cestia (next to Porta S. Paolo and the Aurelian Walls), the church of S.maria Liberatrice and last but not least the Ex- mattatoio, the trademark of the district. In the streets surrounding the Ex- Mattatoio, in the last years, many trendy and fashionable clubs and restaurants have flanked the traditional Roman ones.
